As to Carambar caramel (it comes in various flavours) - my friend Nicolas, with who I met earlier in the week to watch a private viewing of David Hockney at Sothebys, mentioned this candy, his childhood favourite, which reminded me of a similar one I had as a child, called ‘iriski’, so I asked my husband to bring a bag for me from France, which he kindly did. They are like toffees, so do be careful if you have fillings, but ever so gooey and delightful to chew. And if that is not to your liking, this strawberry cake by Violet’s Bakery Clare Ptak, on the menu at Alaia cafe in New Bond Street, is perfect on any day, with the frosting so light, it is utter delight, as is the cake itself, which is moist and delicate - a double delight!
